About the "Voice!"

The Full Story

There have been three! Three "Voices of the Trojans" in the 57 years of

Central Lafourche football. George Broussard, 7 years, Nilton Pierce, 25 years,

and, and me, Tom Plaisance, 25 years. All three were teachers at Central

Lafourche when they began announcing football games.

I have spent some 35 years in the classroom, at Lockport Junior High (1 year),

Central Lafourche, 14 years in the Science Department, 2 1/2 years as a

substitute teacher, and 18 years in the Science Department at Berwick Junior

High in St. Mary Parish.

During my career, I have been the Head Baseball Coach at CL, assistant

coach in football and  Head Girls Track at CL. At Berwick Junior, I was an assistant

in football, Head Girl's Basketball, and Head Track Coach.

During the summer of 1990, I was approached by my good friend,

and former coaching colleague, Randy Breaux, who asked if I'd be

interested in announcing the football games at Central Lafourche High

School. He said, " You had coaching experience, and being a classroom teacher,

you could "talk to people" on the microphone"! I did that for a year, before

the former Voice of The Trojans, Nilton Pierce, came back to the booth,

after working on the track for a season as an Assistant Principal.  I began "spotting" for him

in the press box. He continued to announce until his retirement in 1998.

Once again, I began the 46 steps up and down to the press box as the

third "Voice of the Trojans"! That was 26 years ago.

In September 2020, I was sitting around wondering how many

games had actually been played in Trojan Stadium, and things just

snowballed from there to where they are now.  (327 in Trojan Stadium -

the first 5 games were played at Lockport High School but then were moved

to Raceland High School for 11 games because of better lighting conditions.)

Over the last 3 years, I have spent numerus hours going through

the yearbooks in the CL library, the Lafourche Parish Public Library, and the

microfilm of the Daily Comet newspaper, the Terrebonne Parish Public

Library and the microfilm collection of the Houma Courier, as well as the

Lafourche Gazette. I have collected  a number of football programs

that were published at each of our home games….

but there were still things that I wanted to know.

In September 2023, I put out the word on the Central Lafourche Football Facebook

page of what I was going and what information I needed, and the CL Nation came through

Right out of the box, I heard from two Central Lafourche "historians", Kevin Hargis,

and F. J. Bourgeois. Randy Breaux had a couple of bits of information. Matt Lanegrasse

had a number of program from the 1980's and 1990's that his uncle had kept.

Jessica Oliva and Jacey Blanchard sent in contributions.

Terry Punch, Joe Klingman and John Hartman had copies of the late

1970's and early 1980's program book. Susie Robichaux sent pictures of

Homecoming Courts, that I couldn't find at CL, because the library is

missing a couple of the older yearbooks. Glenn Sapia, Tony Dufrene, Ashley

Dufrene, AJ Dominique, and Brader and Sydney Dufrene sent in their

contributions. My absolute favorite was a picture of the 1967 football

schedule sent by Mike and Marie Breaux. That's year 2 of CLHS history!

Without the help of these good people, this project would never

have been finished.

This is the definitive record of Central Lafourche Football.

It includes all playing dates, locations, results, district games, and a

cumulative record for all 57 years. I have included coaching staffs, year

by year records, scores by year, individual coaches records, records versus

each school that we have played, and our playoff records as well

as all of our Homecoming Queens, and her courts!

During that time I have announced 163 Central Football games,

185 basketball games, 164 baseball games, 13 softball games, 37

Track meets, 1 volleyball game (senior night)  and 2 Fete de Musique

marching festivals. All told 565 events. I have also worked at other

sporting events in Lafourche, Terrebonne, St. Mary, and St. Charles

Parishes. A total of 733 events! And still counting!

Once again, I want to send  my thanks on all those people who

have contributed to this project, and encouraged me to continue my

avocation as the "Voice of the Trojans"! As long as I can get up and

down the stairs in the stadium, I hope to continue announcing!
